I know others who are doing well with various of the devices from Edirol, M-Audio and others. If you are recording for your own purposes, that is a different story. I have a friend doing professional voiceovers and he uses an Audio Technica 2020 that cost him $99. I was able to do much of what they do using this wonderfully free piece of software. Sony SoundForge is a decent product if you buy the high dollar version - but again, more than we need and will use for a lot more money. I use a mixture of audio hijack Pro, Amadeus Pro, and GarageBand to produce my podcasts. There are three programs that I would recommend for this sort of thing: Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge and GoldWave. I'd be glad to help you out if you can't figure out how to do something (as I'm sure most of the people on this forum are). I don't find any benefit to recording above 16 bit / 44,100.

Through your GW program, you can contact the owner who is very responsive and also well informed about accessibility. Audacity is free, multitrack and accessible. I also use sound flower and garage band for my system voice recording as audio hi jack broke somethign with the system voice and recording the mic as well.
